Pathological storage of cholesterol and other fatty particles, which then lead to calcification of inner wall layers (plaques). Narrowings (stenoses) and occlusions in the arteries can occur.<\/p>\n

Complaints:<\/strong>
Exercise-induced heart pain (angina) or muscle pain in the legs (claudication).<\/p>\n

The most dangerous manifestation of arteriosclerosis is acute arterial vascular occlusion.
CAUTION: Acute symptoms caused by arterial vascular occlusion are a medical emergency.<\/p><\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Arterial occlusion<\/h4>\r\n \"logo-gefaessmedizin-muenchen\"\r\n

This results from a sudden vascular occlusion of a preexisting narrowing, sometimes by a blood clot from the heart. Sudden vessel occlusion in the leg (artery).<\/p>\n

Complaints:<\/strong>
Sudden onset of leg pain, usually on one side, paling of the leg, sensation of cold, sensation of discomfort in the leg.

Stroke treatment<\/h4>\r\n \"logo-gefaessmedizin-muenchen\"\r\n

This usually results from a vascular occlusion due to a blood clot, more rarely from a cerebral hemorrhage. The blood clot can form at narrow points in the arteries supplying the brain or in the heart and then be washed out from there into a cerebral artery.<\/p>\n

Complaints:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Impaired speech, impaired vision, paralysis, impaired consciousness.

Peripheral arterial occlusive disease is a stress-induced (e.g., walking) lack of oxygen in the leg muscles with pain.<\/p>\n

Functional circulatory disorders<\/strong>
Defective control of the vessel wall musculature by nerves without the presence of tangible vascular disease.<\/p>\n

Complaints:<\/strong>
Paling of the fingers and\/or toes (Raynaud’s phenomenon) as a result of reduced outside temperatures, followed by overheating with redness and swelling (“flushing”).<\/p><\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

\u2022 Embolism (formation of clots with leaching into smaller vessels)

Sudden occlusion of a deep vein by a blood clot is the most dangerous acute venous disease.<\/p>\n

Risks:<\/strong>
The blood clot can be washed out into the pulmonary circulation (pulmonary embolism), and due to the resulting venous valve damage, an open leg (ulcus cruris) can develop in the long-term.<\/p>\n

Complaints:<\/strong>
Feeling of tension, leg swelling, dull pain, sometimes pain when stepping. If pulmonary embolism occurs, shortness of breath and hemoptysis may occur.<\/p>\n

Weakness of the superficial venous system with resulting dilatation of existing skin veins (varicose vein formation).<\/p>\n

Leg swelling, open leg<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leaky venous valves mostly in the deep, sometimes also in the superficial venous system associated with impaired venous pumping function.<\/p>\n

Consequence: <\/strong><\/p>\n

The “used” blood does not flow upwards to the heart, but back into the leg.<\/p>\n

Complaints:<\/strong>
Congestion-related complaints on the legs are a feeling of heaviness and leg swelling. Persistent leg swelling can lead to skin changes and also the “open leg”\/slow to non-healing wound typically on the inside of the inner ankle (ulcus cruris).<\/p>\n

A clot can form in a superficial vein and spread to the deep venous system.<\/p>\n

Visible enlargement of small superficial skin veins, which is harmless.<\/p>\n
